ABOUT US
The Academy of Human Development was formed in 2001 by a group of philosophers who wanted to assist people in the community. These philosophers brought not only the knowledge and wisdom they had gained through their studies over 25 years, but also the desire to share with others the true experience of joy and happiness they had received through these studies. Students who attend AHD do so for a variety of reasons. Some have suffered loss and trauma and need guidance to get past their pain and disillusionment. Others want to find the missing link in their personal journey of self-development. AHD has responded by making available meditation groups, classes and retreats, which can overcome the disillusionment and pain from past circumstances and provide a life richer in meaning and fulfillment.
Tutors facilitate self-development through experiential activities and group discussion. AHD is not a counseling service, however, each student is provided with the tools to assist in their own development. Naturally, the progression of self-development is at the discretion of the individual and is therefore not the responsibility of AHD. This ensures that any work done on the Self is long lasting.
Since AHD’s establishment many students have experienced the peace and happiness which comes with understanding our true nature. These experiences are available to everyone, but to know who we really are we need to understand who and what we are not. Exercises to help develop inner stillness are practised. Ancient scriptures and the words of great philosophers are used as tools to self-discovery. The Academy offers a friendly and supportive environment for growth to take place. We provide an opportunity to meet new people in a convivial atmosphere and enjoy the company of others with similar interests.
Philosophy at AHD is not a study of philosophy as would find in your universities. The word philosophy itself simply means ‘love of wisdom’ and this is what AHD provides to its students.

AHD runs classes on a Tuesday and Thursday evening. Classes are designed to cater both entry-level students and advanced students. Classes are held at Mooroolbark Secondary College.

AHD RetreatsAHD runs two contemplative weekend retreats for students each term. These retreats also cater for interested people who do not attend AHD. Retreats commence at 8.30am Saturday and conclude at 5.0pm on Sunday.
